Example: Consider that we have an object of mass 10kg. We place the object on a planet that has a gravitational field strength of 5 ms^-2. What is the ratio between the weight of the object on that planet and on the Earth?

Solution: Let the mass of the object be m and the gravitational field strength on the planet and on the Earth be g_1 and g_2 respectively. Let W_1 and W_2 be weight of the object on the planet and on the Earth respectively. Then, by definition of the weight, we have W_1 = mg_1 and W_2 = mg_2. Hence, W_1/W_2 = g_1/g_2 = 5/9.81 ≈ 0.51.
